We study the decay of approximation numbers of compact composition operators on the Dirichlet space. We give upper and lower bounds for these numbers. In particular, we improve on a result of El-Fallah, Kellay, Shabankhah and Youssfi, on the set of contact points with the unit circle of a compact symbolic composition operator acting on the Dirichlet space $\mathcal{D}$. We extend their results in two directions: first, the contact only takes place at the point 1. Moreover, the approximation numbers of the operator can be arbitrarily subexponentially small.

Given a hypersurface coamoeba of a Laurent polynomial f, it is an open problem to describe the structure of the set of connected components of its complement. In this paper we approach this problem by introducing the lopsided coamoeba. We show that the closed lopsided coamoeba comes naturally equipped with an order map, i.e. a map from the set of connected components of its complement to a translated lattice inside the zonotope of a Gale dual of the point configuration $\operatorname{supp}(f)$. Under a natural assumption, this map is a bijection. Finally we use this map to obtain new results concerning coamoebas of polynomials of small codimension.

In these notes we collect some results about finite-dimensional representations of $U_{q}(\mathfrak {gl}(1\mid1))$ and related invariants of framed tangles, which are well-known to experts but difficult to find in the literature. In particular, we give an explicit description of the ribbon structure on the category of finite-dimensional $U_{q}(\mathfrak {gl}(1\mid1))$-representations and we use it to construct the corresponding quantum invariant of framed tangles. We explain in detail why this invariant vanishes on closed links and how one can modify the construction to get a non-zero invariant of framed closed links. Finally we show how to obtain the Alexander polynomial by considering the vector representation of $U_{q}(\mathfrak {gl}(1\mid1))$.

For a compact connected set X⊆ℓ^∞, we define a quantity β′(x, r) that measures how close X may be approximated in a ball B(x, r) by a geodesic curve. We then show that there is c>0 so that if β′(x, r)> β>0 for all x∈X and r< r₀, then $\operatorname{dim}X>1+c\beta^{2}$. This generalizes a theorem of Bishop and Jones and answers a question posed by Bishop and Tyson.

We prove the existence of normal forms for some local real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces with an isolated line singularity. We also give sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface with a complex line as singularity to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a holomorphic function.

This paper studies smoothing properties of the local fractional maximal operator, which is defined in a proper subdomain of the Euclidean space. We prove new pointwise estimates for the weak gradient of the maximal function, which imply norm estimates in Sobolev spaces. An unexpected feature is that these estimates contain extra terms involving spherical and fractional maximal functions. Moreover, we construct several explicit examples, which show that our results are essentially optimal. Extensions to metric measure spaces are also discussed.

We make the elementary observation that the Lagrangian submanifolds of Cⁿ, n≥3, constructed by Ekholm, Eliashberg, Murphy and Smith are non-uniruled and, moreover, have infinite relative Gromov width. The construction of these submanifolds involve exact Lagrangian caps, which obviously are non-uniruled in themselves. This property is also used to show that if a Legendrian submanifold inside a contactisation admits an exact Lagrangian cap, then its Chekanov–Eliashberg algebra is acyclic.

This paper studies stability of the Ekman boundary layer. We utilize a new approach, developed by the authors in a precedent paper, based on Fourier transformed finite vector Radon measures, which yields exponential stability of the Ekman spiral. By this method we can also derive very explicit bounds for solutions of the linearized and the nonlinear Ekman systems. For example, we can prove these bounds to be uniform with respect to the angular velocity of rotation, which has proved to be relevant for several aspects. Another advantage of this approach is that we obtain well-posedness in classes containing nondecaying vector fields such as almost periodic functions. These outcomes give respect to the nature of boundary layer problems and cannot be obtained by approaches in standard function spaces such as Lebesgue, Bessel-potential, Hölder or Besov spaces.
