After the 1980 Census, New York State sued to compel the Bureau of the Census to adjust the population counts, using a regression model. The appropriateness of such models is considered in this paper.

This is a review of bootstrap methods, concentrating on basic ideas and applications rather than theoretical considerations. It begins with an exposition of the bootstrap estimate of standard error for one-sample situations. Several examples, some involving quite complicated statistical procedures, are given. The bootstrap is then extended to other measures of statistical accuracy such as bias and prediction error, and to complicated data structures such as time series, censored data, and regression models. Several more examples are presented illustrating these ideas. The last third of the paper deals mainly with bootstrap confidence intervals.

A long standing problem of probability theory has been to find necessary and sufficient conditions for the approximation of laws of sums of random variables by Gaussian distributions. A chapter in that search was closed by the 1935 work of Feller and Levy and by a beautiful result of Cramer published in early 1936. We review the respective contributions of Feller and Levy mentioning as necessary contributions of Laplace, Poisson, Lindeberg, Bernstein, Kolmogorov, and others, with an effort to place them in the context of the authors' times and in a modern content.

This paper addresses the problem of aggregating a number of expert opinions which have been expressed in some numerical form in order to reflect individual uncertainty vis-a-vis a quantity of interest. The primary focus is consensus belief formation and expert use, although some relevant aspects of group decision making are also reviewed. A taxonomy of solutions is presented which serves as the framework for a survey of recent theoretical developments in the area. A number of current research directions are mentioned and an extensive, current annotated bibliography is included.

This article is a review of the first issue of the Annals of Mathematical Statistics, Vol. 1, No. 1, February 1930. The reasons for the establishment of the Annals and its editorial goals are discussed. Each of the eight articles in the issue is summarized. A few of the similarities to, and the differences from, the first issue of Statistical Science are considered.
