Abstract
A necessary condition is given for certain $L^2$ estimates to hold for the boundary Cauchy Riemann operator and the associated Kohn Laplacian on abstract $CR$ manifolds of arbitrary codimension. A circle of ideas is presented related to a priori estimates for linear partial differential operators.
