We prove a structure theorem for any $n$-rectifiable set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}, n \geq 1$, satisfying a weak version of the lower ADR condition, and having locally finite $H^n$ ($n$-dimensional Hausdorff) measure. Namely, that $H^n$-almost all of $E$ can be covered by a countable union of boundaries of bounded Lipschitz domains contained in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1} \setminus E$. As a consequence, for harmonic measure in the complement of such a set $E$, we establish a non-degeneracy condition which amounts to saying that $H^n \vert {}_E$ is “absolutely continuous” with respect to harmonic measure in the sense that any Borel subset of $E$ with strictly positive $H^n$ measure has strictly positive harmonic measure in some connected component of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1} \setminus E$. We also provide some counterexamples showing that our result for harmonic measure is optimal. Moreover, we show that if, in addition, a set $E$ as above is the boundary of a connected domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which satisfies an infinitesimal interior thickness condition, then $H^n \vert {}_{\partial \Omega}$ is absolutely continuous (in the usual sense) with respect to harmonic measure for $\Omega$. Local versions of these results are also proved: if just some piece of the boundary is $n$-rectifiable then we get the corresponding absolute continuity on that piece. As a consequence of this and recent results in “Rectifiability of harmonic measure” [Geom. Funct. Anal. 26 (2016), 703–728], we can decompose the boundary of any open connected set satisfying the previous conditions in two disjoint pieces: one that is $n$-rectifiable where Hausdorff measure is absolutely continuous with respect to harmonic measure and another purely $n$-unrectifiable piece having vanishing harmonic measure.

In this paper we prove new embedding results for compactly supported deformations of $CR$ submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$: We show that if $M$ is a $2$-pseudoconcave $CR$ submanifold of type $(n, d)$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$, then any compactly supported $CR$ deformation stays in the space of globally $CR$ embeddable in $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$ manifolds. This improves an earlier result, where $M$ was assumed to be a quadratic $2$-pseudoconcave $CR$ submanifold of $\mathbb{C}^{n+d}$. We also give examples of weakly $2$-pseudoconcave $CR$ manifolds admitting compactly supported $CR$ deformations that are not even locally $CR$ embeddable.

In this paper we study generalized Gorenstein Arf rings: a class of one-dimensional Cohen–Macaulay local Arf rings that is strictly contained in the class of Gorenstein rings. We obtain new characterizations and examples of Arf rings, and give applications of our argument to numerical semigroup rings and certain idealizations. In particular, we generalize a beautiful result of Barucci and Fröberg concerning Arf numerical semigroup rings.

Homology theory relative to classes of objects other than those of projective or injective objects in abelian categories has been widely studied in the last years, giving a special relevance to Gorenstein homological algebra.

We prove the existence of Gorenstein flat precovers in any locally finitely presented Grothendieck category in which the class of flat objects is closed under extensions, the existence of Gorenstein injective preenvelopes in any locally noetherian Grothendieck category in which the class of all Gorenstein injective objects is closed under direct products, and the existence of special Gorenstein injective preenvelopes in locally noetherian Grothendieck categories with a generator lying in the left orthogonal class to that of Gorenstein injective objects.

In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz property of two classes of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of numerical semigroups. To this aim we also prove a general result about the transfer of the Weak Lefschetz property from an Artinian Gorenstein algebra to its quotients modulo a colon ideal.

We give an explicit formula for the logarithmic potential of the asymptotic zero-counting measure of the sequence ${\lbrace (d^n/dz^n) (R(z) \mathrm{exp}T(z))\rbrace}^{\infty}_{n=1}$. Here, $R(z)$ is a rational function with at least two poles, all of which are distinct, and $T(z)$ is a polynomial. This is an extension of a recent measure-theoretic refinement of Pólya’s Shire theorem for rational functions.

We show that complex hypercontractivity gives better constants than real hypercontractivity in comparison inequalities for (low) moments of Rademacher chaoses (homogeneous polynomials on the discrete cube).

We consider problems related to the asymptotic minimization of eigenvalues of anisotropic harmonic oscillators in the plane. In particular we study Riesz means of the eigenvalues and the trace of the corresponding heat kernels. The eigenvalue minimization problem can be reformulated as a lattice point problem where one wishes to maximize the number of points of $(\mathbb{N}-\frac{1}{2}) \times (\mathbb{N}-\frac{1}{2})$ inside triangles with vertices $(0, 0), (0, \lambda \sqrt{\beta})$ and $(\lambda / \sqrt{\beta}, 0)$ with respect to $\beta \gt 0$, for fixed $\lambda \geq 0$. This lattice point formulation of the problem naturally leads to a family of generalized problems where one instead considers the shifted lattice $(\mathbb{N} + \sigma) \times (\mathbb{N} + \tau)$, for $\sigma, \tau \gt -1$. We show that the nature of these problems are rather different depending on the shift parameters, and in particular that the problem corresponding to harmonic oscillators, $\sigma = \tau = -\frac{1}{2}$, is a critical case.

We consider surfaces of geometric genus $3$ with the property that their transcendental cohomology splits into $3$ pieces, each piece coming from a $K3$ surface. For certain families of surfaces with this property, we can show there is a similar splitting on the level of Chow groups (and Chow motives).

A method of constructing Cohomological Field Theories (CohFTs) with unit using minimal classes on the moduli spaces of curves is developed. As a simple consequence, CohFTs with unit are found which take values outside of the tautological cohomology of the moduli spaces of curves. A study of minimal classes in low genus is presented in the Appendix by D. Petersen.

Let $\Lambda$ be a numerical semigroup, $\mathcal{C}\subseteq \mathbb{A}^n$ the monomial curve singularity associated to $\Lambda$, and $\mathcal{T}$ its tangent cone. In this paper we provide a sharp upper bound for the least positive integer in $\Lambda$ in terms of the codimension and the maximum degree of the equations of $\mathcal{T}$, when $\mathcal{T}$ is not a complete intersection. A special case of this result settles a question of J. Herzog and D. Stamate.
